[FAQ on New Projects/Continuing Reviews/Changes] Obtaining a Certificate for Completion of “6 Hours of Research Ethics (REC/IRB) Training Within the Past 2 Years”

Subject: For all new projects, continuing reviews, and changes submitted to the University’s REC, all research team members must possess a certificate of completion for “6 hours of research ethics (REC) or human subject research (IRB) training within the past 2 years(within 2 years retroactive from the submission date). (Including any new research team members added through a change)

Description: There are 3 options for obtaining research ethics (REC/IRB) training. Research teams are reminded to plan ahead to complete training according to their needs.

I.      Participate in on-campus training ※ On-campus training webpage: The University’s REC Homepage/Training/The University

The Research Ethics Committee organizes 2–3 research ethics courses per semester in principle, each lasting at least 3 hours (free of charge for faculty members and students of the University).

II.     Participate in off-campus training ※ Off-campus training webpage: The University’s REC Homepage/Training/Off-Campus

Information on research ethics/human subject research training organized by external research ethics units is available; please register with the organizer to participate.

III.    Online training: Recognized online courses approved by the University’s Research Ethics Review Committee are available on the homepage of this website.

  1. TRREE (Chinese website)/TRREE (English website): After completing a module, print out the certificate as supporting documentation of having received research ethics training.
    (As resolved in the June 10, 2022 meeting, each TRREE certificate received for completing 1 small module will be recognized by the Committee as equivalent to 3 hours of research ethics training)

  2. The NTHU ’s “Academic and Research Ethics Online Education Platform: Make sure to first filter for courses under the [Research Ethics] category. After watching and passing the course, print out the certificate as supporting documentation of having received research ethics training
  3. Ministry of Education’sCenter for Taiwan Academic Research Ethics Education (AREE) courses: Currently, the Committee only recognizes some of the courses as research ethics training hours. Please download the attachment to check whether your AREE hours are on the list of modules designated by the Committee. The Committee currently recognizes 23 modules but will only count the hours of up to 12 modules. (1 module is 20 minutes, and a maximum of 4 hours may be counted as research ethics training hours)
    Notice dated September 5, 2025: Link to the table of modules designated by the Committee.
  4. CITI (English website): After completing any lesson, print out the certificate as supporting documentation of having received research ethics training.
